The predisposition of having both acne and clogged pores is hereditary. Those who develop acne and acne flares easily have a tendency to RH ( Retention Hyperkeratosis). This is a condition that causes a build-up of dead cells on the skin surface and within the follicle. Instead of dead skin cells desquamating from the skin, they will stick to the surface, causing a thick surface while also gathering inside the follicle.
Another genetic factor is “oily” skin and excessive sebaceous production. Many people inherit their oily skin and pore size. The sebum will coat the cell build up in the follicles and cause a clump of sticky dead cells. The more the cell buildup occurs, the clumps will then develop into a follicular impaction known as a comedo.
It’s important to understand that genetic conditions cannot be changed. Although, they CAN BE manipulated! We can do this by performing treatments and using the correct products to clear the skin. This won’t change the hereditary factors, but it will help manage them. The only type of skin is “Normal.” Everything else you hear is actually a skin condition. We have gotten so used to skin professionals and people on social media telling us there are different skin types such as “dry, normal, oily, etc.” You may have even been taught that in esthetics school. That’s false. If you dive deeper into skin science, the layers of skin, and how skin functions, you will clearly note that skin is made to be normal and hydrated. Everything else is due to an imbalance either topically or internally. The idea is to BALANCE and MANAGE the skin by manipulating it into being “normal and hydrated” which translates to “healthy” skin. If the reasons for your acne are hereditary and treatments and products are discontinued, its possible for the acne to reoccur in time. There is no actual CURE for acne. Using good clearing management techniques is the only way to manage breakouts when they are caused by genetic factors. During your skin journey with me, you will learn your triggers and managing techniques so you’re able to take control of your own skin whether or not you continue to see me long term. The idea is to MANAGE this type of acne once your skin is clear.
