It seems as though most people notice their aging under eyes right around this time of year. The skin under our eyes shows our age first (as does the skin on our neck, lips, and the back of our hands) because it’s much thinner than the skin on the rest of our body and we don’t have oil glands under our eyes(or very, very few) leaving our skin unable to produce its own oil when in need of hydration.
I have mixed feelings about eye creams. Here’s why: Not everyone needs them! And, if I’m being honest here, many of them are glorified face moisturizers with a hefty price tag.
If your face cream is based around hydration (without exfoliating or extremely active ingredients that are too active for sensitive areas) and you don’t have sensitive eyes, you should be able to use your face cream near your orbital bone. Our body heat allows the cream to travel closer to our eye, so be cautious when applying your face creams too close to your lash line and NEVER apply facial products to your eyelids unless your products or your skin practitioner specifically indicates you can. The eye lids are one of the most forgotten areas to treat, so being able to apply a product to your eye lids is a bonus especially since its one of the first places to become crepe. This is why a good eye cream MAY be a good investment if you’re older than 25 or are seeing signs of aging.
Hydration should be your first focus. After all, the lack of hydration is the main reason the skin starts to age. It’s never too early or too late to keep your eyes hydrated! If you’ve already started to experience signs of aging, you’ll most likely need an active eye cream but for now, these products are focused around hydration and plumping to keep your skin from further aging.
Here are a few of my go-to products and combinations I reach for when the weather starts to take a toll on my eyes.
1.) I NEVER go without Lira Hydra Infusion. Ever. You’ve probably heard all about the amazing benefits of hyaluronic acid. Here’s the thing: HA needs something to bind to in order to bring moisture to the skin. Enter: SILVER EAR MUSHROOM! HA binds to the silver ear mushroom, allowing it to act as a stand alone hydrator for dry skin. It’s never about ONE single ingredient. Formulation is KEY and I have YET to find another serum as hydrating as the Bio Hydra Infusion. Bonus: You can use it on your lips and full circle around your eyes. This is going to sink into the skin nicely to TREAT your dry skin rather than mask it like many skincare products do. You may want another cream to top off your skin’s surface if you want a little more glide but its not necessary in order for this product to work.
2.) If you DO need a little more oomph and glide, you can top off with Lira’s Mystique Eye Cream (an ACTIVE eye cream that CAN be applied to your under eyes and eyelids!). The brightening and hydrating effects are just the beginning, it has an ingredient included in the formula to act as a Botox substitute for those who want a more natural approach.
Still need a little more hydration for those with EXTREMELY DRY CREPE under eyes? Try adding in one of these multi tasking products:
Mystique Illuminating Oil: My all time favorite DRY oil! It’s an active oil FULL of beautiful ingredients meant to TREAT your skin. It’s able to penetrate your skin unlike other oils that often sit on your barrier. This oil has MANY, MANY uses including under eye hydration. If you have dry crepe skin or, have had irritation under your eyes, apply a tiny drop of this oil to either your current eye cream, the Bio Hydra Infusion, or the Mystique Illuminating eye cream and apply. Or, apply a tiny dab OVER your eye cream. Of course, you can use this one all on its own because the oil is able to sink into your skin.
Another favorite multi-tasker is Mūn’s Aknari’s Youth Serum. It’s lightweight enough to keep concealer in place and yet its extremely rich in antioxidants and is an oil-based serum, allowing your skin to get that intense hydration it may be craving. Although, my suggestion would be NOT to apply this to your eye lids. This product has not only been used as skincare but it’s been known to be used on the runway to perfect skin for makeup, giving your skin a youthful glow!
I hope this helps your dry winter eyes! Remember, the first step is to HYDRATE. Without hydrated skin, prevention and correction cannot take place.
